*. Eef Albers .*

Album: Pyramids (1987)
Genre: Jazz Rock Fusion (Free Jazz)  /  Netherlands

I first came across jazz-rock guitarist Eef Albers on the "Focus con Proby" album (where he and Philip Catherine stood in for Jan Akkerman) and was immediatly impressed. Then I spent 12 years trying to get hold of his work without success. So well done to Amazon for getting hold of his 1987 album "Pyramids", which has just been rereleased. It's not up to me to say what the best or worst tracks are, because we all have different tastes, suffice to say that this an excellent album of jazz-rock themes, from gentle melodies up to full-blown elated lead playing. Great piano and flugel horn work too. If you like Jan Akkerman, John Scofield, Larry Carlton, Allan Holdsworth etc, then you'll almost certainly like Eef Albers, although he has a style of his own. I'm slightly baffled by the track "Everlasting" in that the distorted lead break is different to the one I once downloaded several years ago. Presumably he must have rerecorded it at some time, but it's difficult to get information on his music. Anyway, poor old Eef is very underknown so probably only 6 people on the planet will read this review, but I hope it's of some help to you. Check out Eef Albers - I think he's one of THE great guitar players! Review by "andyengland" (www.amazon.co.uk).
