*. The Black Angels .*

Album: Indigo Meadow (2013)
Genre: Psychedelic Rock (Garage Rock/Neo Psych.)  /  USA

Galloping at full speed all the way from Texas, The Black Angels come baring the gift of new music in the form of new album Indigo Meadow,  so I threw on the Cowboy hat and chaps and sat down for a listen. OK, so I perhaps I didn’t need the hat and chaps, it’s hard to listen to Psychedelic music when you look like a resident at the Village People retirement home but despite this oversight I managed to plough on. There’s a classic air about this album, it feels like a classic, like I’m going through my mums old LP’s and discovering something exciting and dusty, but old these guys are not, brining a new slant on a classic sound isn’t an easy job. It takes skill to do this kind of music without sounding like a poor quality covers band and The Black Angels do a good job of keeping an old sound fresh, no more so than in top tracks Evil Things and Don’t Play With Guns. Both tracks keep the melodic sound but chisel in a more modern beat with some moments of clarity. Later on in the album the guys stumble in Eels territory and the sound becomes more classic rock than classic glam with some true moments of inspiration. The Black Angels deliver a good album with some great tone, the lyrics are solid and it’s exactly what we expected from this band, real psychedelic stoner-rock with a classic feel. Time to loose the Cowboy hat and throw on the wig, platform shoes and shirt and roll myself something tasty. Review by "Machine Steve" (www.theblackflag.co.uk).
