I have been so looking forward to the debut full length album by Allentown, Pennsylvania female fronted melodic metal band MindMaze. Mask of Lies is certainly the best melodic metal album of 2013 as it is absolutely perfect ......unless of course you don't like melodic metal! Although it has roots in melodic metal, Mask of Lies certainly has influences of power metal, progressive metal and heavy metal and contains some very catchy songwriting that is made even better by the terrific vocals of Sarah Teets. She is not at all operatic and has a voice that works very well for melodic metal and is spot on in tune! What makes this album even more special for me is it contains lots of extended instrumental sections which let the musicians shine. I love all of the melodic guitar solos found throughout the album. The last song, Destiny Calls contains an extended instrumental section and I get giddy every time I listen to it. This song best illustrates how MindMaze likes to put extended instrumentals on nearly every song. I have to mention the production/arranging of the album. I love it. Sarah is pretty high in the mix when she sings and has a clear voice. What I like, though, is the sound found here is not at all overproduced. It is a real sound....one you would expect to find out of an exceptional bar band. The band seems like they would be approachable and just wants to make catchy music and share it with us. If you like female vocalists and melodic metal with excellent musicianship and lots of guitar solos, I would definitely check out Mask of Lies. If you like some female heavy metal wails, some nice semi-acoustic sections and some portions that gallop along like Maiden, well you know what you must do! Mask of Lies is awaiting a listen from you. BTW, the first band MindMaze lists as their influence is Maiden! Yes!
