Album: Heterodyne State Hospital (1977)
Genre: Psychedelic Rock (Hard Rock/Acid/Pub Rock) / USA
I don't see this mentioned yet on any of the other reviews, so a little back ground info is in order. This album was 'supposedly' recorded at the Sonoma State Mental Health facility, in Cal. Live photos inside the gatefold purportedly support this, but it's anyone's guess whether it's really is true or not. Why this album is so often mentioned in psych collector circles is one of life's mysteries, but it's probablydue more to the fact that this is just a great record, that psych collectors(or any other genre collector, for that matter) also happen to like a lot. It could be argued that there are some mild neo-psych tendencies buried in the mix, but it strikes more as just tongue-in-cheek hard rock album; bizarre, but with subtle psych influences. It is quite consistent, and well worth investigating. I always got lots of response when playing it on my old radio programme. Grades - 4 B+'s, 2 B's, 1 B-, and 2 C+'s. Came on blue vinyl with a lyric sheet. Review by "tymeshifter" (Rate Your Music).
RATING: 7.5 / 10
