*. Sensational Alex Harvey Band .* (SHM-CD Remaster 2014)

Album: Framed (1972)(SHM-CD Japan Remaster 2014)
Genre: Hard Rock (Glam Rock/Blues/Prog Rock)  /  UK

First official record from the SAHB (after The Joker Is Wild released the same year). More heavy and blues oriented than the next albums. Everything here is powerful, rough and the feeling you hear a sensational band is growing more and more from "Framed" until "Saint Anthony". We can already notice the cabaret side of the band with the (long title !) song "There is no light on the Christmas tree mama, they're burning big louie tonight" : a very strange song, kind of polka stuff with lots of chord changes before the chorus in a more country direction. But the album's peak remains "Isobel Goudie", a very subtle song in 3 parts ; in this song Harvey explains the story of a girl who "doesn't do the things she should". The song begins slowly with Cleminson's simple riff accompanied with Hugh McKenna's farfisa and Harvey's childish voice, before the chorus explosion...The different parts afterwards indicates a progressive rise : she is "the princess of the night" but little by little, things become more serious and it ends with a "coïtus inteRRRRRRRuptus" sung with a distinctive scottish accent. I really would have liked to see them performing this song on stage, an interesting experience... I like that album a lot and more and more, full of positive energy and it rocks a lot. The cover version of "I Just Wanna Make Love To You" is really sensational with an exciting horn section whose presence culminates at the end of the song, in a totally joyful and convincing way...no Muddy Waters covers can be better than that. The song is followed by "Hole In Her Stocking", a dancing and entertaining song that moves you even more, especially after the break, with that amazing saxophone agonizing. You can't stop from singing "she's got hole in her stocking but she keep on rocking". You don't feel alright, just listen to that record, a good therapy. Review by "sanglochon" (Rate Your Music).
