Superb Lyrebird specialise in the skewed, the oblique, the aberrant. Although Anoised may serve as the group's debut release, the four members of Superb Lyrebird are no strangers to the music game, having performed in current and past Sydney bands such as Self | Is A Seed, Fat Slinky and Endusk. They've brought their collective experience to the table and crafted a textured and intelligent EP which runs the gamut of alternative rock sounds. Clocking in at just under 40 minutes, the 6 track EP is almost as long as most full-length albums, with all of the songs exceeding the 5 minute mark. The jagged rhythms of opening track 'Insignificant Appendage' with its abrasive chords and double-kick heavy drum pattern encapsulates the band's penchant for irregular time signatures and dissonant sounds. The track ebbs and flows between and engrossing wall of sound and wistful melodies; a song that follows no specific song structures. It's a similar musical thread that runs throughout all the tracks, with the band always reaching for something a little left of centre. Lyrically, vocalist Dave Bleus keeps it fairly ambiguous, which ties in well with the music. Having lent his vocals to two prior Self | Is A Seed EPs, Anoised is Bleus' strongest vocal performance committed to tape. A thoughtful EP that belies its debut title. Anoised is essential listening for fans of heavy music that leans towards the irregular. Review by "Dom Alessio" (www.myspace.com).
