Every now and then variety is something one expects and would like to hear... with Hekate I was favourably impressed. I hadn't heard of Hekate ealier, so I assumed Hekate is a gothic rock/metal band. How wrong could I be? Hekate plays celtic folk music with some pop and dance influences (which fortunately weren't too frequent), at least that's how I describe their music. This album is true immersion course — you'll hear English, French and Italy (finally an album which allows me to use my French skills). The songs are atmospheric and melodic. They are quite diverse, ranging from haunting atmospheric songs to upbeat odes and heavier drum bombardments. Songs usually have catchy rhythm department, and actually some songs are heavy although there aren't any distorted guitar parts in them. Drums have been used skilfully to give different impressions. In addition to female vocals (Susanne Grosche) there are also some male vocals (Axel Menz)... Susanne Grosche's voice is quite good, so no complaints about that (however Axel Menz's voice could improve). One word of caution, though: there are some oriental melodies to which western music listener's ear may need time to get accustomed to. The usual RockReviews visitor might wonder why there's a review of Hekate here (it isn't rock)... Well RockReviews' aim is to promote good music and Hekate's Goddess is a good album. Open-mindedness is really important and I support it. So give Hekate a change and listen some of the samples at their website. Production-wise this album has been done well... The overall sound is atmospheric and most of the sounds are felicitous. Overall this album is good, and I recommend it to the open-minded listeners. If you have listened to Era and/or Enya, you might like Hekate. Review by "Mage" (www.rockreviews.org).
