Album: The Wait (2012)
Genre: Prog Metal (Exp. Post Metal/Psychedelic)  /  Finland

From time-to-time I find myself uncomfortably out of my element when a CD is dropped on my desk for review. And although I'm open to experiencing new sub-categories within the prog/rock genre, my personal preference and usual listening habits tend to gravitate towards symphonic, classic, retro, neo, and instrumental progressive rock. And unless prompted to do otherwise I shy away from a of R.I.O., avant garde, and the bulk of the heavy metal bands with growling vocalists. Yet as a fellow musician I can appreciate all the time, effort, and dedication that went into each undertaking - as well as amazing collective talent on the disc - it's just not my cup of tea. Chalk it up to my advancing years - or the fact that I've mellowed out in my old age and no longer relate to, or tolerate, the frenetic caterwauling of a young man or woman aggressively screaming at the top of their lungs through my speakers. And unfortunately, vocalist Jani Rämö, the lead singer of the prog/metal group Nauticus from Turku Finland, fits the stereotypical heavy metal growler bill. Not quite as bad as some thrash or death metal vocalists, but as I implied earlier ... simply not my cup of tea. Nauticus' self-produced sophomore album "The Wait" is an oppressive apocalyptic-themed concept album that conveys a melancholy aura of doom-drenched dread and impending chaotic anarchy. Unbridled ferocity permeates the disc like a full on German blitzkrieg attacking from all sides with thrashing guitars, a barrage of drums and gut thumping bass, and the megaphoned screams of a manic General Field Marshall sweeping across the blood-drenched landscape driving on to victory. It's an aural assault on the senses bombarding you into submission ... then leaving you emotionally drained. The musicianship is excellent, hard-driving, and energetic - as is the impeccable recording and mixing of Antti Loponen, and production by drummer Tuomas Rajala, Antti Loponen and the band. Nauticus should appeal to fans of guitar based metal groups like Metallica, Fates Warning, Opeth, Iron Maiden, and Queensryche, and not necessarily the symphonic prog/metal bands with keyboards like Dream Theater, Symphony X or Ayreon. The one exception being the astounding 11 minute finale, "Kaimisto" which is a fitting epilogue to the cataclysmic aftermath. "Kalmisto" is an absolutely beautiful instrumental track that plays like the closing scene in an epic film. The music wells up building to an emotional crescendo - tugging at your heartstrings. It's easy to envision the camera slowly panning back to reveal the human carnage and absolute devastation as the screen fades to black... and the credits roll. *. Hopo .* (Reissue + Bonus)

Album: Senti (1982)(Reissue 1992 + 6 Live Bonus)
Genre: Prog Rock (Symphonic Prog)  /  Italy

Little is known about this obsure band from Italy. It wouldn't surprise me if the even the biggest ISP collector isn't aware of this quintet. Through my search in the internet it was almost impossible for me to find a trace of the band's biography. ''Dietro la finestra'' is considerded the best album of HOPO,but their debut ''Senti'' ,released in 1982, is also a very strong album with undenieable elements from the classic italian prog period of the 70's. The CD release of ''Senti'' contains 12 tracks, that means the six tracks of the original release along with six more tracks recorded live in Florence by the same time. The first eponymous track of the album is a rhythmical pop/prog song of high quality not very far away from the poppier sound of the early 70's italian bands. First epic of the album is ''Per strada'',an excellent track in the vein of PREMIATA FORNERIA MARCONI and BANCO DEL MUTUO SOCCORSO with nice flutes, excellent work on the digital keyboards, mostly Hackett-ish guitars and a superb guitar ending theme very close to CAMEL's Andy Latimer style. ''Nascondino...'' is a beautiful acoustic guitar piece of music. ''Rana'' is another short prog piece of music with nice guitars close to CAMEL and weird water effects. ''Crema'' is a strong song- oriented track with second-era GENESIS solos,a rhythmical yet complex middle part and stunning vocal performance by Paolo Tovolli. ''Singolarita'' is influenced again by the british prog scene but after the middle section it transforms in a dark sounding track with great organ, strong drum work and alternating guitars between darkness and romanticism,a sound very close to BANCO DEL MUTUO SOCCORSO. Among the live tracks is ''Mister rock'',an unreleased track of the band with little progressive interest as it is an average rhythmical rock song and nothing more. The rest of the tracks come from ''Senti''. The band does perform very strong with little changes on the tracks comparing to the studio versions but the sound of this live recording is just above average. HOPO's ''Senti'' is an excellent album IMO and it is one of the best examples of how the ISP sound would become through the years to come. Strong influences from the biggest italian bands of the 70's combined with a more modern technology such as digital keyboards,''Senti'' just heads in the future. A very good addition to any prog rock collection. Review by "apps79" (Rate Your Music).

*. Chris Rudolf .*

Album: Chris Rudolf (2012)
Genre: Prog Rock (Crossover/Neo Prog)  /  USA

Chris Rudolf is a lead guitarist, vocalist and composer. He also plays classical guitar, keyboards and bass guitar. His musical interests and influences are wide encompassing many genres of rock, jazz, classical, and various ethnic musics. He composes, records and performs music in the progressive rock genre. The styles of today's modern progressive metal bands and the retro groups representing glory days of progressive rock in the 1970's are a part of Chris' musical conception. At the same time, his approach to music, composition and performance in the progressive rock genre is as likely to be inspired by French impressionist pianists as it is by acoustic fingerstyle guitarists and even the explorations of jazz improvisers. There are no limits or boundaries in music. Chris just completed his first solo album, entitled Chris Rudolf. On this recording he played electric and acoustic guitars, keyboards, bass guitar and sang all vocals. He was also the recording engineer and producer. Steve Lauer contributed the drums and percussion for the album. Chris Rudolf is a member of the progressive rock band, Timelight. (www.chrisrudolf.com)

*. PGR & Franco Battiato .*

Album: ConFusione (2010)
Genre: Prog Rock (Crossover/Pop/Rock)  /  Italy

*. Áuryn .*

Album: Demo (2012)
Genre: Prog Rock (Heavy Prog)  /  Argentina

(www.facebook.com).

*. Midas Fall .*

Album: Eleven. Return and Revert (2010)
Genre: Crossover Prog (Post Rock/Alternative)  /  UK

Veering somewhere between ambient and post rock, Midas Fall are one of the latest exports from Scotland (which seems to be creating a few great bands as of late), aiming for lush atmospherics with their album enititled Eleven. Return and Revert. The crooning at the beginning of 'Bright lights will harm no-one', done intensely over a repeating guitar loop, is the welcome mat to a creeping song that changes rhythm. Like a two-headed beast, the song has two sides, both of them soothing and slightly dangerous. On a technical side, the mixing is top notch. All instruments are perfectly blended and again, the beautiful voice of Elizabeth Heaton has a sense of depth, captured pretty well on audio. Some songs can be revisited and little details, like a pick attack in the background in 'Nautical song', are to be found. This sort of reward makes the album experience a bit richer in Eleven. Return and Revert. There are introspective moments here and there, mostly in the shape of the piano-driven 'War pigeon', the poignant ballad/dirge (apply accordingly to mood) that is the foyer to the last third of the album. Here, not only is the mood slightly more belligerent, the songs interlock together in a more coherent way. The lovely piano makes a comeback on a track called '17', only this time there is no longer an ambiguous feeling around. It's all about longing and desire, with the vocals used again as a beckon, while guitar and backing vocals envelope the rest of the instruments. The album, though, can be a little taxing if your taste is for short songs. This doesn't mean it's lacking energy , its just a little bit more diligent in its attack, perhaps even humble. Amidst the atmosphere and drones, there is a poetry, with a sad voice juxtaposed. 'Stalking moon' closes the album with a bang, with a note that resonates even after the music has stopped. *. Sense of Wonder .*

Album: Shingenma Teisen (1984)
Genre: Prog Rock (Symphonic/Crossover/Heavy)  /  Japan

Sense Of Wonder is the group of Japanese keyboardist Hiroyuki Namba. Mainly known for composing animé/video game soundtracks, Shingenma Taisen is just a vanilla album, complete with vocals (in English), that came out in 1984. It’s one of those mega-symphonic keyboard prog albums that were big in 1980’s Japan. There’s some moments of 80’s mega-cheese (the rather silly hard-rock oriented “Sadistic Psychic Tiger” especially), but for the most part it’s fairly nice, overflowing with classically-styled piano, symphonic synths and even some Mellotron. Not an absolute paragon of the style, but worth searching out for the progger who has it all, and is into this particular style.

Album: Glass Castle (1990)
Genre: Prog Rock (Symphonic/Crossover)  /  Japan

*. Vangough .*

Album: Acoustic Scars (2012)(Ep 5 Track's)
Genre:
Prog Metal (Prog Rock)  /  USA

Provocative and entertaining Oklahoma progressive metal act Vangough takes a turn to the acoustic with their new EP Acoustic Scars. According to principal songwriter, guitarist and vocalist Clay Withrow, this set was born out of their round trip to the most recent ProgPower event in Atlanta. The EP revisits the last two albums covering the themes and stories of the Rabbit Kingdom. True to form Vangough need not be electric or necessarily metal to intrigue and entertain you. For Acoustic Scars, Withrow adds to his acoustic guitar, violin from Justus Johnston and cello from Jose Palacios. These elements add from folk to dreamy character to the music. Mostly this orchestral and symphonic sound can be either chilling or inspiring. It's simply a nice touch, a positive redirection to Vangough's compositional imagination and brilliance. To the five songs, there's an intro, Leaving Bricolage, and an outro, Road to Blighttown, both instrumental. The former moves into the longest track, the contemplative and moving, A Song for Crows. Throne of the Rust, in the middle, allows for a transition from introspection to the more joyous latter half and the livelier, yet clearly emotional, The Rabbit Chronicles. Road to Brighton, the outro, is a mysteriously subjective piece suggesting many thing, the least of which is what Vangough will encounter down the road. Though I'm not sure what's in store after Acoustic Scars, it certainly suggests something new will be upon us from Withrow and Vangough. Certainly, Acoustic Scars is an excellent way to round out 2012 in the progressive rock field.

*. Hekate .*

Album: Goddess (2004)(2Cd's)
Genre: Prog Folk (Neofolk/Darkwave/Celtic)  /  Germany

Every now and then variety is something one expects and would like to hear... with Hekate I was favourably impressed. I hadn't heard of Hekate ealier, so I assumed Hekate is a gothic rock/metal band. How wrong could I be? Hekate plays celtic folk music with some pop and dance influences (which fortunately weren't too frequent), at least that's how I describe their music. This album is true immersion course — you'll hear English, French and Italy (finally an album which allows me to use my French skills). The songs are atmospheric and melodic. They are quite diverse, ranging from haunting atmospheric songs to upbeat odes and heavier drum bombardments. Songs usually have catchy rhythm department, and actually some songs are heavy although there aren't any distorted guitar parts in them. Drums have been used skilfully to give different impressions. In addition to female vocals (Susanne Grosche) there are also some male vocals (Axel Menz)... Susanne Grosche's voice is quite good, so no complaints about that (however Axel Menz's voice could improve). One word of caution, though: there are some oriental melodies to which western music listener's ear may need time to get accustomed to. The usual RockReviews visitor might wonder why there's a review of Hekate here (it isn't rock)... Well RockReviews' aim is to promote good music and Hekate's Goddess is a good album. Open-mindedness is really important and I support it. So give Hekate a change and listen some of the samples at their website. Production-wise this album has been done well... The overall sound is atmospheric and most of the sounds are felicitous. Overall this album is good, and I recommend it to the open-minded listeners. If you have listened to Era and/or Enya, you might like Hekate. Review by "Mage" (www.rockreviews.org).

Album: Qui Est AmAndA? (2002)
Genre: Prog Rock (Neo Prog/Opera Rock)  /  Belgium

New Belgian act, hailing from the small village of Jollain-Merlin near the Belgian-French borders. They were formed in 1999 by theatrical singer Thibaut de Halleux and keyboardist Mik 3 (real name: Michael Cauchies),initially performing as a trio.Moving on as a keys/voice/bass/guitar/drums quintet,Amanda self-released their debut ''Qui est Amanda ?'' (Who is Amanda?) in 2002. Modern melodic progressive rock with Classical inspirations and strong elements from Opera is what the listener has to deal with here.Everything seems to start and end in Halleux's theatrical singing and Mik3's keyboards here. The tracks feature a mainly grandiose operatic atmosphere with high-pitched vocals and Classical-influenced keys.Mik3 uses a variety of synths to capture the atmosphere of Classical Music and Opera, the result is often very attractive, but the sound could certainly be richer.Comparisons with ANGE are strong and eventual, from the numerous vocal-based breaks to the constant use of symphonic keys, though with a more modern edge.Weird enough the shorter tracks work better for the band, containing nerve, energy and groove under this operatic symphonicism. The long epic ''Falaises'' is rather too long, too soft, too melancholic and too melodic to be either conveincing or fully appreciated, some more dynamics would help. Some nice guitar solos are also in the menu, but the rest of the band definitely remains in the background. Amanda's first album is a good proposal for anyone into modern grandiose Symphonic Rock with a theatrical vibe and fans of a stronger keyboard-driven sound.A richer and more balanced sound would help the band reach the top of the prog league but nevertheless their debut is quite interesting and partly original. Recommended. Review by "apps79" (Rate Your Music).

*. Majestic .*

Album: V.O.Z. (2012)(2Cd's)
Genre: Prog Rock (Symphonic/Neo/Crossover)  /  USA

Wow! Just when it looked like the year was going to close unceremoniously, along comes something literally majestic. Over two years in the making…and for us fans… waiting. But it was worth it. Yes, I loved their last album, "Ataraxia", but this one surpasses it within the first CD of the two CD set. The album is produced by multi-talented instrumentalist Jeff Hamel, and includes new band members and collaborators. Hamel plays all guitars and keyboards; Mike Kosacek, plays all drums and percussion. Hamel has invited several guest vocalists in order to paint a wider pallet. They include: David Cagle, Tara Morgan, Chris Hodges, and Celine Derval. Vladimir Moldavsky's artwork rivals some of the best in the field. The album was mastered at Sage Audio by Steve Carrao. So let's jump right into it…
CD I - "In Memory of …" is an excellent almost Gallic sounding pipe opening, created with keys, to the album, providing a gatefold of musical orchestration that will welcome and at the same time captivate you immediately. The first CD is a full magnum opus track in 10 parts. "VOZ I – New World" brings the new sound of Majestic with David Cagle handling vocals. It is a swift departure from "Ataraxia", which almost exclusively featured female vocals. And I have to admit that I do miss Jessica Rasche's vocals. However, the "Tubular Bells" like keys at the opening draw you into the music so fast that you will be completely immersed before you can give the change too much thought. Hamel's Squire-like bass and powerful lead guitar are a great combo treat added to all of the wonderful keyboards being played. "VOZ II – Crossing Meridian", continues the power of those keys, this time sounding more like a piano, and Cagle's vocals. The guitar work on this track is also exceptional. The drumming will also have you keeping rhythm. "VOZ III – Approaching Storm" and "VOZ IV – Milestone" are incredible instrumental tracks that truly create their own stories without words. The piano keys and synth effects blend so well into cruising, then crushing guitar notes. The overflow guitar notes surround Tara Morgan as she unfolds the lyrics to "VOZ V – Whispers". Beautiful vocals…best on the album…haunt the keyboard and guitar weavings as she spins the web that locks in your attention. The jazzy guitar, soft drums and keys excellently intermingle with flute sounds and Morgan's soft vocal almost effortlessly. "VOZ VI – Freefall" opens with excellent flute sounds and eerie keys and guitars chords. This will take you right back to side two of Genesis "Lamb' at times. Excellent change of direction and sound. "VOZ VII – Darkened Worlds" opens with cool acoustic guitar and great supporting keys. Chris Hodges, the better of the two male vocalists, sings this one. It is one of the best tracks among a greatest hits pack on this first disc. The spacey keys will take you back to many of Arjen Lucassen's space adventures. "VOZ VIII – Rise to the Surface" is full of cool drums and percussion at the opening. The amazing guitar work slowly grows into an earthquake of sound as the instrumental track continues. "VOZ IX – Skies Clear" is just like it sounds. Full of keys and synth effects. Amazing keys that lift you out into flight. "VOZ X – Voyage Ends" has a thundering drum, bass, and lead guitar opening set to spacey key rhythms. Just the kind of epic storm surge to end this first CD. Cagle is back and demonstrates his ability to yell with the best of them during the track's high moments.
CD II - "Zosimos Sleeps" is an almost harpsichord rhapsody set with flute and violin effects. It is a short instrumental interlude before the action begins again. "Becoming" roars forward with full on classic Hammond – like keys, synths, and bombastic drums and lead electric. It almost sounds like an instrumental, until Celine Derval's hauntingly familiar vocals; yeah, she sounds a lot like Jessica Rasche, takes center stage. The guitar and keyboard work continues at its high level of excellence. "Spirits Dwell" is another very cool instrumental piece full of eerie keys and great lead guitar. This one has memories of Yes all over it. Chris Hodges returns to the vocals on "Around the Sun". Amazing song. In fact, this and "Darkened Worlds" are the best male vocal tracks on the album. Well, with a name like "Hyperbole", you know what to expect. Slicing Rush-like lead guitar, pounding drums, smashing bass, and some very cool '70s "dripping" guitar. Wah, wah. Very cool. "Becoming (Reprise)" is a piano –like instrumental full of hope and high notes after that last rumble through the stormy seas. "Red Skies" is Derval's best vocals wrapped around spacey keys that take this closer to epic proportions. Hamel unleashes powerful grinding lead guitar, heavy drums and bass to punctuate the end of this double album masterpiece. You can feel and sense the amount of time and effort put forth in this double album from the first to the very last note. This truly was a "magnum opus" for Majesty and Hamel. If you enjoyed "Ataraxia", you will truly love "V.O.Z.". Kosacek's drums are ever-present and full of life throughout this double album. No fillers. Every song is necessary and full of dynamic inspiration. The mastering of the disc is superior and will make this a great addition to any record collection. Since much of the album is instrumental, it is more of an experience within a story. You really need to hear and experience what Hamel has brought to the soundstage, rather than read from me what it sounds like. Everything you could possibly want. Long instrumental tracks, great vocals, incredible keys, powerful drums, ripping guitar, soft slow acoustic, piano…it's all here. If you're new to Majestic, this is a great place to start. If not, what are you waiting for…go and add this to the rest of their discography. Review by "Mark Johnson" (www.seaoftranquility.org).

*. Hiroyuki Namba .* (Reissue + Bonus)

Album: Party Tonight (1981)(Reissue 2000 + 1 Bonus)
Genre: Prog Rock (Symphonic/Exp./Crossover)  /  Japan

Examen par "DarkFakt" (Rate Your Music).

*. Day of Phoenix .* (Remaster 2012 + Bonus)

Album: Wide Open N-Way (1970)(Remaster 2012 + 2 Bonus)
Genre: Prog Rock (Psychedelic/Folk/Jazz)  /  Denmark

As you can expect from an album the title song should be a highlight. Not true in every case - but this time by all means. When listening to Wide Open N-Way you're first immediately forced to believe that this is an american westcoast psych band. Accent-free vocals and a very cool straightforward sound with acoustic guitar. But then they are showing another second sight right away with a weird piano and guitar echoes dominated krautrocked interlude. And that's nowhere near enough - we also have high speed guitar jamming (with some slight technical problems) - and then surprisingly coming back to the main theme in between. Very complex what can be stated for nearly the whole album by the way. The two Cellophane parts are noticeably headed by Karsten Lyng and Ole Prehn delivering an excellent accentuated virtuoso twin guitar work. And then Mind Funeral has to be mentioned - they didn't take the song title literally by the way - as for the compositional aspect at least. The song consists of two different moods - first the solid westcoast psych touch. And then the band takes a deep breath in the second half and offers a wonderful jamming jazzy part which you may not have expected when listening for the first time. 'Wide Open N-Way' is not plain psych/space music - you should brace yourself for sophisticated psychedelic based rock with some jazz elements by contrast - sometimes even eclectic and ahead of the times in 1970. Highly recommended because absolutely enjoyable even nearly 40 years later! Review by "Rivertree" (Prog Archives).

*. Norma Winstone .*

Album: Stories Yet to Tell (2010)
Genre: Jazz Music (Vocal Jazz/Acoustic)  /  UK

The British Jazz Diva, singer Norma Winstone, with five decades of amazing career behind her, is still an unstoppable creator of heavenly music and every new release, which features her incredible voice, is a gift from musical heaven. On this exquisite album Norma is accompanied by just two musicians, the German clarinetist (bass) and saxophonist (soprano) Klaus Gesing and Italian pianist Glauco Venier. This intimate setting is ideal for this delicate, fragile music, which floats like a butterfly from one song to another, showing the different shades and color of its wonderfully colorful wings. The music comes from different sources: some of it is composed by Gesing or Venier, some is traditional and a couple of standards are also present. Norma wrote the lyrics to all of these songs, another formidable showcase of her amazing talents. Overall this album is way beyond just music; it's a complete aesthetic / intellectual love affair, which, when properly appreciated, is a source of bliss and delight. It seems futile to describe the music using words, just grab this album, pour a glass of wine and sit back and listen…and enjoy. Life it too short to miss this! Review by "Jazzis" (Rate Your Music).

*. Borderline Syndrome .*

Album: Stateless (2012)
Genre: Prog Metal (Experimental/Rock)  /  Greece

Borderline Syndrome is a rock band from athens, greece. formed in 2010, the band is influenced by the majority of music genres, trying to blend everything under their musical style. Having enjoyed equally musicians like the dillinger escape plan, tool, radiohead, bjork, ulver, king crimson and miles davis, the band’s music varies from modern extreme mathcore to radiohead-like pop along with elements derived from greek traditional music. Believing that it is time that people stopped listening to specific music genres and perceive music as a whole, borderline syndrome mean to express a variety of feelings as has to do with complexity, tension or lyricism. From melodic, simple easy-going songs to complex, dissonant heavy tracks, the only aspect that Borderline Syndrome try to keep common is musical quality. The mixing and mastering procedure of the band’s forthcoming album “stateless” has just finished and Borderline Syndrome are currently seeking a record label and a management & tour agency. *. Anyone's Daughter .* (Remaster 2012 + Videos)

Album: Live (1984)(Remaster 2012 + 4 Video Track's)
Genre: Prog Rock (Symphonic Prog)  /  Germany

After getting all Anyone´s Daughter studio albums I was quite curious about hearing them live, since my PA colleague Ken Levine regarded them as a band that plays better in front of an audience. And I must say he is right. Although I wouldn´t call Live a masterpiece, there is no denying that the performance here is quite more powerful than their studio counterparts. It is always good to find a bunch of musicians who actually do their best and need no recording trickery to show how fine musicians they are and how special their chemistry works. This CD is clearly the case. Ok, some people would say their repertoire is not exactly their finest, since it is focused primerily on Anyone´s Daughter last album, the more commercial leaned, Neue Sterne. But since I liked that record (it is still prog enough to convince me) it´s alright. Besides, their sound was always towards the lighter side of the progressive rock scene (some say it actually open the road for the upcoming neo prog movement). And they never let the quality factor down. Some tracks are specially strong like the live renditions of Moria and Der Plan, real outstanding. I was a bit disapointed that only the first part of Adonis is present, It would be great to have it all since its version here is also better then the famous studio track. The presence of three unreleased tracks are a bonus and adds a lot to the overall effect of the album. The down side of the tracklist is the inclusion of a drum solo (under the name of Peterchens Mondfahrt). Drum solos are ok during the shows: you have time to go to the bar to get a bear and relax a little before goind back to watch the rest of the show. The inclusion of such display of self indulgency in place of a ´real ´ song (specially when so many AD fine tunes could be here) is unforgiving. 5 minutes and 41 seconds of lost time. The album ends with an excellent, 11 minute, version of the track Anyone´s Daughter. Live is a real treat for fans of the band. And a good starting point for the ones who still don´t know this rather underrated classic german outfit. An excellent live document that would deserve a five star rating if they had included a complete version of Adonis and dropped the useless drum solo track. *. Midas Fall .*

Album: As Our Blood Separates (2012)(Ep 5 Track's)
Genre: Crossover Prog (Post Rock/Alternative)  /  UK

Listening to Midas Fall is a little like being submerged in water: it’s surreal, other-worldly, and has a fluid quality that allows the music to fully surround the listener. A post-rock quartet comprised of Elizabeth Heaton (vocals/guitar), Rowan Burn (guitar/piano/bass), Simon Morgan (synths/piano/guitar), and Pedro Pellat (drums), Midas Fall somehow manages to marry multiplicity with minimalism. Haunting and tender, melodious and powerful, As Our Blood Separates is an aqueous compilation that showcases Midas Fall’s ability to completely infiltrate the listener. Elizabeth Heaton’s vocals are emotionally-charged and have a very erotic quality, oftentimes tribal in nature. Her voice rising and falling, she seems to sigh into some words and throw the full force of her voice behind others. That being said, Midas Fall is not one of those bands that hold the bulk of its talent in one single member. Heaton, Burn, Morgan, and Pellat should consider themselves lucky to have found each other. They complement each other and work as one cohesive unit, each bringing something equally as unique and indispensable to the music. The song “BPD” opens the EP and sets the mood for the remainder. Centered on a slightly discordant piano riff played in the higher register, the song has a haunting and ethereal quality to it. “As Our Blood Separates” is instantly captivating, beginning with a bare guitar in unison with the vocals. This song is nothing short of beautiful and is so artfully put together you can tell no note or sound was left unexamined. Also included on the EP is a cover of Nine Inch Nails “Hurt.” True to Midas Fall’s style, this interpretation is haunting and soft, but not without an intensity or power behind it that demands attention. My favorite part of the song is when she sings, “you can have it all, my empire of dirt, I will let you down, I will make you hurt.” Reznor’s lyrics coupled with Midas Fall’s ability to conjure a unique power and emotion through sound really just makes for an amazing interpretation of an already awesome song. As Our Blood Separates does not disappoint. Fluid and moving, it will stay with you long after the echo of its final piano chord has faded.

*. Kaipa .* (Boxset 5 Cd's + Bonus)

Album: The Decca Years 1975-1978 (2005)(5 Cd's Remaster + Bonus)
Genre: Prog Rock (Symphonic Prog)  /  Sweden

Finally, now you don't have to look for the LPs to experience Kaipa. The Box includes the studio albums Kaipa, Inget nytt under solen and Solo, a cd of Live recordings and a CD of rehearsal recordigs. It also includes a 50+ page booklet with Info about the CDs and the Biography of Kaipa (in English), also many photos. Both Kaipa and Inget nytt under solen has been expanded with bonus tracks. Kaipa has got a great sound, influenced by Yes, Genesis, Camel, ELP etc. Rating this box is quite hard, since the three studio albums (Kaipa, Inget nytt under solen and Solo) are great. At least musically. The Lyrics can come a bit silly for those who understands Swedish. The Live recordning's sound quality is quite unfair, I think. Also, it doesn't include any special "suprices". Like many prog-bands Kaipa are great musicians and perform live as good as in studio. Because of that this CD feels more like a best of- more than a live record. The fifth CD with the Demo recording might not be the most interesting part of this box. Although, interesting for the real Kaipa-fans. If the box only would include the studio albums, I would rate it 5, but since I have to rate the whole box in it's entirety, I must say it's not a masterpiece, but anyone who likes Symphonic Rock would love this box (at least the studiorecordings). *. Haji's Kitchen .*

Album: Sucker Punch (2001)
Genre: Prog Metal (Groove Metal/Exp./Electronic)  /  USA

There are some bright spots on this disc, but there's some real "filler" material, too. Some of it sounds more metal, some of it sounds more electronic.. first track in particular sounds out of place & doesn't represent the rest of the disc at all. Not as much in the way of cool riffs or solos when compared to the Shrapnel debut, although Medicated, Syncopated & Face Down are standouts in those areas. Singer is a downgrade from the debut disc as well.. this guy is really tough to understand and has one of those nightmarishly annoying vibratos. Not an awful disc or anything, just a bit uneven. It's one of those you re-arrange the track order on your iPod, putting the filler at the end of the list. Review by "MetalMinded" (www.amazon.com).

*. Plenilunio .*

Album: Respiri Lunghi 1000 Miglia (2012)
Genre: Prog Rock (Crossover/Symphonic Prog)  /  Italy

PLENILUNIO originate from Acqui Terme in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy, the same part of the country that also produced bands such as ATON'S and LOCANDA DELLE FATE. Oddly enough PLENILUNIO are fairly close in musical terms to those artists albeit they are less intricate and err more on the side of mainstream rock. Their name translates in English as ''full moon'' and it was chosen because of the band's interest in the legends of vampires and werewolves. That source of inspiration doesn't appear to stretch to their songs although these are driven by the notion of escaping from reality into a world of fantasy and dreams. Information on the band members is scant but drummer Fabio Zorgno and guitarist Fabrizio ''Biz'' Genta share a background in the fusion-based THE PITCH BOYS. The remaining members are Valter Camparo (keyboards), Roberto Camparo (bass) and lead singer and main songwriter Roberto Maggiotto. They released their debut album ''Respiri Lunghi 1000 Miglia'' in June 2012 and its accent is on short, concise compositions that blend romantic Italian pop with elements of progressive rock. The band's main influences are the major UK prog groups of the seventies, but in spite of the strong influence from across the Channel PLENILUNIO sing in their mother tongue. In fact, it is through Maggiotto's voice that the RPI mainly finds expression. He sounds not unlike the great Leonardo Sasso, thus reinforcing the above comparison with LDF, and in parallel with his passionate vocals are some distinctly Italian timbres among the keyboards and guitars. *. La Tulipe Noire .*

Album: Words of the Wind (1992)
Genre: Prog Rock (Neo Prog)  /  Greece

Long before Greek Neo-Progsters La Tulipe Noire entered the foreign market, they presented themselves in early-90's to the Greek underground rock scene with the greek translation of the later name (Mavri Toulipa).Practically their line-up was the same with the later effort ''In The Gates Of Dream'': G.Hyde on bass, female singer Lena behind the microphone,Spyros Kontakis on guitars,Alix on keys, while their drummer by the time was Babis Leontiadis.Their debut was made on the Greek label Wipe out Records in 1992,a LP only release entitled ''Ta logia tou anemou'' (Words of the wind''),recorded at the legendary 111 Studios in Athens, the music shelter of many Greek cult rock bands. Stylistically the band explores the same style as on their later works, dreamy Neo Prog with emphasis on symphonic keyboard arrangements, emotional solos and melodic guitar work with some more grandiose heavy passages thrown in for good measure and strong lyrical content.Actually the keyboard/piano work of Alix is really captivating and among the more symphonic approaches met in Neo Prog and the guitar work has strong similarities with the 80's MARILLION's albums, especially the instrumental passages are really interesting. What holds the album from rising into a higher level is the use of the Greek language,a sort of unsuccesful experiment,as the type of music sounds so strange mixed with the language.Additionally, and while Lena has a good and clear voice, the dull social lyrics are typical of dark Gothic bands and anyone familiar with the Greek language will find them cheesy against the style of music presented.Otherwise the album has a fair amount of decent Neo/Symphonic moments to offer to a prog listener with a very ethereal atmosphere created by the musicians. Finally, the production of the album is not the best, but definitely better compared to the band's early efforts as La Tulipe Noire. The rest of the story is known.By 1997 the band would change the name into La Tulipe Noire mainly due to the interest of foreign companies in their music and all lyrics would afterwards be written (fortunately) in English. I would not call this album essential for a listener of Greek citizenship, as I am.The lyrics is a bit of a problem. The music though is quite good with a special reference on the awesome keyboard work and foreign listeners can add even a whole star to this rating.Almost recommended.
