*. Simone Fiorletta .*

Album: Personalities (2013)
Genre: Prog Metal (Hard Rock/Exp./Instrumental)  /  Italy

There has always been something about an axeman who plays ‘songs,’ one who plays fluid lines within an instrumental composition worthy of taking the place of what would otherwise be for a vocalist to lead, as opposed to shred for the sake of shredding. Having made headway with his progressive metal band Moonlight Comedy, Simone Fiorletta has always taken a natural and sophisticated down to earth metalized rock and roll approach with a handful of solo albums; being more song driven, gripped by a melodic fervor where even in an instrumental notion, provides hook laden material. Not one to phase in a desperate identity as a jazzmaster or bluesman, Simone Filoretta’s style sets in with the classic Shrapnel-era as well as Satriani, Vai, George Bellas, & Vinnie Moore, but he’s no one-trick-pony – sure there are arena metal rockers “Your Grit is My Reason for Life,”  “In Time of War,” & “Thirty” that are gripping with melodic intrigue, where it’s very much set that there is no need for lyrics in this case; we’ll just let the six strings do the talking. However, he does not rule out flexing musical might as he adds sentiment on the AOR flavored “Unconditional Love” and the happy-go-lucky Austin boogie of “To the Station” captivating other moments in a collective of enigmatic guitar slinging splendor. It’s very rare that a guitar record conspires to be a bona fide arena oriented hard rock record, pleasing to the ear with settling harmonious grandeur, stamped with a vision focusing on the soulful side of soloing, while at the same time, devoid of the follies of melancholic and narcissistic arpeggios & arrangements that go nowhere. So does personalities contend to top the lists as one of the finest instrumental guitar records of 2013, I think so. Review by "Tommy Hash" (http://ytsejam.com).
