*. Radar Men From The Moon .*

Album: Strange Wave Galore (2014)
Genre: Psychedelic Space Rock (Jam Band/Exp.)  /  Netherlands

Radar Men from the Moon is a Dutch four-piece psychedelic slash math slash kraut slash jam slash stoner rock band. Their recent albums from 2011 and 2012 are respectively called Intergalactic Dada & Space Trombones and Echo Forever, which were noticed and praised by multiple websites and festivals. Radar Men from the Moon got to perform during last year’s Roadburn festival and Duna Jam, and toured through different parts of Europe. The official release of Strange Wave Galore (album stream: bottom of this post!) is tomorrow but we already had a couple of days to listen to it, to write a little review and to invite you to the official release party. Because we like parties! What’s to expect of this third album? Looking at the running time, we’re dealing with the shortest of three: 36 minutes, which is 10 to 15 minutes shorter than their predecessors. Both were albums to just listen to in one go as you should expect from a space rock band. The band also attracted a fourth member, Niek, who is already taking his place behind the synth on the album. We already got a little teaser in the shape of a track of this record that was posted two weeks ago on YouTube, which you can listen to below if you didn’t do that already. First noticeable fact on the new record is that they take quite a different approach to the genre: I wouldn’t call it math rock straight away, but it’s pretty technical for a psychedelic band. Not a bad thing at all, it pulls the listener in and together with the resonant drones of the second track it is able to form a sweet introduction of this album. And when suddenly the next track starts, it’s time again to thank baby Jesus for space rock. The following two tracks are as catchy as they are heavy, with a prominent drumming compared to earlier work and the synth taking up its place in the band. This is the moment that the album should be played at its loudest, because the closing minutes of the fourth track are heavenly if you’re looking for rumbling guitars, effects freaking out and a drummer going nuts. And looking at the album as a whole, these moments of mayhem are scarce. The overall sound of Strange Wave Galore is no uncouth wave of fuzzy guitars and endless jams. Sometimes it breaks out and stirs up its audience, but most of the time the music is refined and flirts with the sound of bands like Maserati. This influence is most prominent in the second to last track, which shows the musical growth of Radar Men from the Moon. I think this album will raise some eyebrows from people who are expecting more of what they have already heard from this band, but it’s an accomplishment to try other stuff and still be a recognizable band. So you probably read that we were talking about a celebration, eh? That’s right. Radar Men from the Moon will have their album release party tomorrow the 30th in De Effenaar, Eindhoven. Of course they will perform live, but they also brought The Oscillation and Those Foreign Kids with them. And to top things off, a special crew from Liverpool Psych Fest will take care of psychedelic visuals and sounds during this whole evening. But we have more. To top off the topped off things, it is also the kick-off for the great new festival Eindhoven Psych Lab, that will take place in early June! Review by "Incubate" (http://inlog.org)
