*. Idiogen .*

Album: Idiogen (1986)
Genre: Prog Rock (Psychedelic/Exp./Alternative/Rock)  /  Slovenia

A Slovenian trio from Koper, led by guitarist/singer Andrea Flego and existing since the early-80's. Early activities included dense rehearsals, live performances and several line-up shakes, until in 1984 the group recorded a cassette on DiD Koper. A proper self-titled LP was recorded the following year in two different studios with Drago Hrvatin on bass and Damijan Barut on drums, while bassist Zare Pavletic participated in three tracks. The album was released in 1986 on Produkcija Slovenija, the first trully independent record label in Yugoslavia. Idiogen's style was a powerful guitar-based Rock with strong psychedelic influences from the 70's, led by the figure of Flego, who produced the energetic grooves, minimalistic textures and scratching riffs the group was characterized for. Lots of guitar distortions, trembles and hypnotic rhythms are in Idiogen's menu. The vocals are all in English, but Flego's voice is a bit sterile and colorless. In terms of energy and power the band receives a good value, in terms of flexibility though ''Idiogen'' has not much to offer, despite the pair of long tracks. The same formula is followed in almost all pieces, intense lyrical rhythms blended with guitar-led instrumental, slightly psychedelic textures with a normal number of breaks, that doesn't win an originality prize. Additionally some New Wave/80's Rock flavor, typical of the era, is discreetly present throughout the album, while some spoken narrations sound very flat, adding nothing to the group's style. A complete 80's obscurity from Yugoslavia, maybe a good purchase for lovers of guitar-driven Psych/Prog with a slightly experimental vibe, but no more than this.
