Album: Fingerprints Of The Gods (2001)(2 Ep's on 1 Cd)
Genre: Prog Metal (Melodic Metal/Prog Rock) / Italy
Helreidh's label Underground Symphony has now presented yet another release that contains two discs in one package (the first being Memerize's Vulture's Paradise). The odd thing about this is that the 1st cd is an EP by the respective band of new material and the 2nd cd is a set of covers. The covers done here are: ADRAMELCH's Zephirus", WARLORD's "Mrs. Victoria" and IRON MAIDEN's "Stranger In A Strange Land". Admittedly I have never heard any of the originals of these songs but if I had not known they were covers I would swear the tunes were Helreidh's given the personal touch given to each. Here again comes another cd that was super difficult to appreciate until multiple listens were completed. One of the aspects of this release that required the biggest adjustment was the vocals. Franco Violo's singing at times can be somewhat odd but always melodic and fluid yet at other times he sounds like a young Peter Gabriel, rather weird in my book nevertheless highly effective. My comparison to Italy's Black Jester (an excellent power prog band of the mid-90's) has more to do with the energy and pacing of the music as oppose to the BJ's overwhelming intensity (Helreidh's original drummer used to be in BJ). Promotional material for this release stated that Helreidh has an epic feel to their label of progressive metal/rock. I would tend to disagree. My read on this band tends to be that they take the basic approach that the outstanding Time Machine does. They play progressive rock that flows in their own style and don't really give a damn to acceptable conventions. At times the band goes for an atmospheric feeling with elegant keyboards swirling about and chucky guitar rhythms are tossed in for good measure. Review by "Ernesto Manzo" (www.amazon.com).
RATING: 8.25 / 10 **GREAT**
