*. The Spiritual Bat .*

Album: Through The Shadows (2008)
Genre: Gothic Rock (Psych/Folk/Dark/Prog)  /  Italy

THE SPIRITUAL BAT is an Italian two-piece that is an evolution from THE SPIRITUAL BATS project originally founded in 1992. The new project initially was intended to release only instrumental tracks, but you never know how things turn out in the end right and so it came that - during the realization of the album, second member Rosetta Garri got a burst of inspiration and started to write lyrics for some of the track and subsequently debuted as vocalist. The result - the album ‘Through the Shadows’ - eventually saw its release in November 2008. With the starting riff of the opening track ‘Through the Shadows’ I found myself reminded of the original The Crow Movie where, Brandon Lee’ standing on the rooftop playing this incredible guitar part, before destroying the instrument. Guess it’s the kind of sound processing they did on the instrument that’s penetrating every layer of the first track’s sound; A classy Goth Rock Sound with a truly powerful female rock voice. In ‘Wandrin on Cobble Hills’ we get introduced to an instrument I didn’t think I would ever get to hear in combination with this kind of Goth Rock: A flute, and it’s not simple chords coming to our ears instead it’s complex melodies obviously played by a virtuoso on that instrument, which we’ll meet again on a couple of other tracks on the album and every time it steals the other instruments the show. It’s just too fascinating to listen to. The drums on ‘Waltz’ sometimes follow a slightly unusual time signature. Besides that it’s a little reminisce of those Finnish hymnal metal tracks, especially in the chorus with the keys and guitars working together to carry Rosetta’s vocals to new heights. ‘The Golden Cage’, an instrumental track carries on with a rhythm quite similar to the ‘Waltz’ track while being on a whole different level in terms of complexity an featuring the - in my opinion - best riffs on the disc. I can’t help it, but the drums on ‘Sogno Tribale’ don’t quite fit to the rest of the album’s sound. Sounds like electronic drums have been used and somewhat out of place amongst the guitars and bass. Anyway, the track evokes an atmosphere that is blowing like a cold wind through the song. A cold synth wind for that matter. I like that style of THE SPIRITUAL BAT, I really do, and especially that flute player is amazing. But what I missed is some tracks combining the strong vocals and the flute play. I think they would complement each other in a great way. As mentioned before, this is - to a certain extend – a classic Goth Rock sound and not everyone likes that style, but even if you didn’t so far, you should try once again. Recommended!
