*. Quimera Music .*

Album: More Than Human (2011)(Mini-Cd)
Genre: Prog Metal (Symphonic/Melodic Rock)  /  USA

Their EP “More than Human” consists of 8 compositions, and was released on the 19th of April. The intro is epic indeed, and the next song “Angel Slayer” kicks in featuring gothic musical elements, a European oriented sound in the likes of Within Temptation etc, distinct references to the 70s rock scene, and all is based on Quimera ’s quite remarkable voice. On with “Immortal”, a dynamic song with bombarding riffing and keyboards that disclose the musical path they want to convey to the listener. Next one is “Shadows”: the ethereal singing, the melancholic aura shape a special ambience, quite darker than the one emitting from the previous tracks. “The Forgotten” is a somewhat calm composition, having a characteristic “cinematographic” feeling, with the vocals stealing the show once again. The homonymous one to follow is the EP’s greatest song too: firstly, an opening with folk and Celtic musical character; from here on, Quimera herself shoulders the weight to make the composition meeting its apogee through her performance, a trip from medieval to today‘s rhythm. “Victoria’s Lullaby” – is actually a song that would certainly suit for an epic movie OST. Finally, “Danse Macabre” is an epic folk song, reminiscent of Faith and the Muse, and “Cantus” concentrates a dark folk grandeur: poetry, romanticism, melancholy, exceptional vocals sum up the best conclusion possible for this EP. Now, as one may deduct, my feelings towards this EP are quite mixed. First, there are definite and deep influences ranging from medieval, folk, Celtic, to opera, gothic metal and 70s’ sound. I no case do I question Quimera’s performance, but I hold some objections regarding the style and path they’ve been following as a whole. On the other hand, all this experimentation going on may very well tire others. All I hope is that they will soon invest some though on the musical road they will to walk, make their presence more intense, and configure a fan base of their own. Personally, I would seek for more originality and an act in which less musical weight is shouldered by the vocals; the other instruments should also have a firm stand. Regarding the EP hard copy and the info it offers, I can assure you this is one of the best pieces to have ever laid my hands on.
