So what is Avant-Garde? Avant-garde quite simply represents a pushing of the boundaries of what is accepted as the norm or status quo primarily in popular culture. The notion of the existence of the avant-garde is considered by some to be a hallmark of modernism. I like to think of it as uncharted water. So enter Crimson Chrysalis a 4 piece Rock band based out of South Africa. Citing from the bio of Rene: Crimson Chrysalis is a South African female rock artist currently living in Pretoria. I have been in the music industry for quite sometime, but used to perform under the name “René”. I made a total directional change, and went from the Afrikaans acoustic-rock genre to neo-classical rock. I grew up in Bloemfontein, and completed the Unisa grade 1 piano exam already at the age of 5. I got my first guitar at the age of 8, and started giving guitar lessons at the age of 12. The guitar is still my leading, and favorite instrument. Crimson Passion Cry is the culmination of a two-and-a-half year journey by the Crimson Chrysalis creative team. René van den Berg, as the singer/composer, and Esther Slabbert, the lyricist, had a vision to create more than just another album. We wanted to establish a sophisticated, wall-of-sound product that has a purpose above and beyond mere entertainment. Crimson Chrysalis’s latest album Crimson Passion Cry is a somewhat dark, exciting album full of music that can be listened to in any situation. The songs on the album are a mixture of songs that encourage you to tap your foot, but also offers a wide variety of emotions and subject matter. All 14 tracks provide a intensely exhilarating experience that can tingle the senses into submission. In this aspect I think I get Crimson Chrysalis 100%. Indeed over the years music is best enjoyed loud for many different reasons. Some feel music is a way to buzz the senses during any activity – concerts, clubs, dancing, exercising, getting drunk, all of the above and more – you get it. Some want to go deeper and darker. From one of their more starker tracks “Angels and Demons” to more straight forward title track and “Deo Volente”, any music fan can find something they would enjoy in this mixture of songs. Crimson Passion Cry offers an ample listening environment with a foreboding sound that sets an intense mood. This will encourage the listener to delve in life’s mystery, no matter what the circumstance. René van den Berg deserves a lot of credit for brining all this tougher. Crimson Chrysalis is an interesting avant-garde musical project worth checking out. Her energetic, stimulating sound can be appreciated by anyone that enjoys music, even those who typically may not enjoy one particular genre. I enjoyed this album sitting on my couch on full blast, with eyes closed eager to see where the musical journey took me . This sounds so simple but it’s in this setting Crimson Chrysalis will work it’s magic on your senses. Review by "J.J. McCall" (www.rocknrollview.com).
