Last time we got anything in from Eternal Tapestry it was that ace jammy LP of their collaborative radio session with post-dub titan Sun Araw, and now they’re back to going it alone. Once again the design on the front cover involves a big circle. Is this their trademark? The record itself is on Calpol-coloured vinyl. Remember Calpol? That weird syrup your folks made you take when you were little so you weren’t sick all over your mum’s car. But I digress, on this record we’ve got some of the quintessential modern psych jammers doing some totally accessible bong jams which range from blazing streaks of distorted guitar to dusky east-meets-west mystical twinkling. There’s loads of shamelessly over-the-top weed grooves with wailing duelling guitars and propulsive drum grooves, leaving something which falls between the ballsy riffing of White Hills and the more cosmic stoner chunters of Sylvester Anfang II. Or maybe a bit like a more accessible, fluid take on what Causa Sui are doing? There’s three short(ish) jams on the first side and then a single long one on the flip. It doesn’t really ever head anywhere unapproachable or obtuse, just lots of sun-bleached, groovy twinkles and wibbles and ballsy (sometimes cheesy) guitar soloing. I think I like it best when they settle into quite a restrained krauty groove in third track ‘Marrow of the Wand’ and then play around over the top - the communication between the musicians is great and while they’re always fiddling around doing something weird the aesthetic never gets overcrowded or difficult to listen to. The jam on the second side takes things down a notch, and the watery wah guitar sound and super-slow dubby groove are really reminding me of the Araw collab actually. Lots of leisurely showing off of guitar tones and fretboard mastery in a dusky, plodding, dope-fried passage of glorious slo-fuzz atmospherics. It sounds like if Ennio Morricone was in a stoner band, which is pretty much the coolest thing I’ve ever even thought. I’ve said before that these guys are one of the ultimate weed rock bands around right now, and this record is doing nothing to change my mind. Totally far-out, intuitive and enjoyable bong jams.
