*. Julie Murphy .*

Album: A Quiet House (2012)
Genre: Prog Folk (Acoustic/Contemporary Folk)  /  UK

Finding Julie Murphy for the first time is a little like finding a diamond on a beach, a rare and wonderful experience. To continue that metaphor you are torn because on one hand you want to keep it to yourself, it feels fragile, like it doesn't belong to you and if you show any body it will be taken away, but on the other hand you can't wait to tell everyone about it. Julie's acclaimed and beautiful voice is so delicate and tranquil, hearing it against her musically advanced yet blissfully empty musical arrangements is a spectacular combination. The album name, "A Quiet House" is a perfect place to enjoy this music; it is a relaxing, reflective, introspective and absorbing album. The horns and brasses resonate through this album like a familiar ghost, chilling and gentle washing through tracks like "Essex Song" and "the Sugar Spell", haunting and chilling they seem to anchor the whole album on your heart, they bring sadness to the sound too but a reflective and pensive one. Her use of spoken word in "convoy" is poignant and dramatic as she reads diary entries from a lost ships log, this song has a dark side, as the captain "he lies, his eyes quarried by glittering fish ", maybe he is the ghost haunting this album. Simply Beautiful.... This album is best listened to in bed, halfway between sleep and awake. If you let it, it will change you.
