*. Rossometile .*

Album: Terrenica (2009)
Genre: Prog Rock (Heavy/Crossover/Metal)  /  Italy

It is fortunate that ROSSOMETILE have chosen the latter route, and have pursued it with skill. Their sophomore release, “Terrenica,” is not an exceptionally heavy album, nor is it an album comprised of a lot of technical wankery. It is, however, a tight, well-written album that is both haunting and engaging. New vocalist Angela Grassi's voice has a fallen-angel quality to it that is enchanting. Her performance is a captivating focal point for this album, even for a listener unable to understand the Italian-language lyrics. The emotion that just her vocals bring to this album is enrapturing to the listener. The accompanying composition, arrangement, and musicianship on “Terrenica” complement this haunting quality. A few songs bear a whispering resemblance to “Power Windows”-era RUSH, particularly those tracks that employ bass pedals or low-end synthesizers to create a dark fill for the music. The guitars employ a variety of techniques, frequently moving between and among power chord riffing, barre chord strumming, and arpeggio picking, and thus create a dynamic, multifaceted sound. To dissect this album in such a manner, however, is pointless, bordering on disrespectful, for “Terrenica” is much more than the sum of its parts. The real strength here is something intangible – the emotive overall quality of the total package. ROSSOMETILE have created something here that is a sonic expression of emotion, and should not be missed.
