"Les Perches du Nil", Dan the Man's 2007 effort, offers a refreshing departure from his more contemplative recent musings and from the grand "Heritage of the Celts" series of the 1990s. The album, comprising all vocal numbers in French and occasionally African dialect, lies in a Gallic 'pop' vein, with several co-authors and guest vocalists. This blend of styles is largely successful, adding a rootsy nuance to the music at times: a little like Baka Beyond in parts ( as opposed to the electronica of, say, Afro Celt Sound System ). Dan's frequent themes of place and travel are quite prominent here ( though his distinctive guitar tone maybe less so ), and the journey embraces his usual mixture of reflective moods and mid-tempo, radio-friendly fare. Not a radical shift, but a welcome one just the same from a seasoned performer still interested in his craft. Review by "Pablo C" (www.amazon.co.uk).
