*. Fleetwood Mac .* (SHM-CD Japan Remaster 2013)

Album: Future Games (1971)(SHM-CD Japan Remaster 2013)
Genre: Prog Rock (Folk/Blues/Rock/Psych/Jazz)  /  UK

Fleetwood Mac's second album since the departure of Peter Green takes a much larger step away from the blues sound of the first incarnation than it's predecessor. With the addition of two new writers in Bob Welch and Christine McVie, "Future Games" largely consists of psychedelic folky tunes and jazzy numbers. Christine McVie's songs, the up-tempo  "Morning Rain" and upbeat "Show Me A Smile", are the exceptions. Both are nice enough although her contributions to the succeeding album are basically the same, just better. Bob Welch arrives with a bang in the form of "Future Games". This song has a wonderful, dreamy feel and would take the titles of 'best track' if it wasn't for Kirwan's "Sands of Time". Welchs' second contribution, "Lay It All Down", is a nice rocker, but the lyrics weigh it down (I hate it when rock groups get Biblical). Danny Kirwan keeps up the good work with his three contributions, "Woman of 1000 Years", "Sands of Time" and "Sometimes". "Woman of 1000 Years" has a really ethereal feel to open the album and "Sometimes" is a nice, mournful country tune with simple lyrics. "Sands of Time" is a sensational seven minutes of music from wonder boy Kirwan. It has such fluid movement, (changing pace at the beginning and end) breath-taking melodies and the guitar passages that come in after each verse are absolute genius.
