Too scattered an album to be a classic, this is still a collection of great songs. I believe this was recorded and released multiple times in different configurations over about 4 years, so I'm going off the Rykodisc release from 1998. Some songs, like the opener "Silent Hills", are straightforward instrumental pop-rock. "Down By The Seine" and its reprise are bluesier with vocals, not too far off from Chris Isaak. Then there's the main attraction for me, Lanterna's more majestic, sparse pieces. "1985" is a little bit like CODY-era Mogwai, with lots more reverb. "Dark Spring" perfectly recalls the feel of a departing thunderstorm. On and on this record goes, and I never get tired of it. The half-point off is for "Turbine", a go-nowhere rocker that sticks out badly on most listens.
