When your first thoughts on listening to a record are ‘sounds like Roger Chapman of Family fronting System Of A Down’ you know you are in for an interesting ride. This is the second album from Finnish rockers, The Lidocaine, their first being released back in 2009. Unhinged metal is probably the best description I can give of what the band produce, could be a whole new sub-genre there. I would suspect that SOAD have had an influence but The Lidocaine offset their quirkiness with some solid riffs which underpin each track and hold things together as ably demonstrated on ‘Personally Sick Skin’ and the excellent ‘The Tail’ which is a cracker of a track. Going back to the ‘Family’ reference made earlier, as well the vocal similarities there is also a prog edge to some of the tracks which adds to the mix. Over the course of the 11 tracks the band prove themselves to be good musicians and songwriters with many twists and turns packed into each track. There is a twelfth track on the album which goes uncredited and would appear to be called ‘I’m A Closet Gay’ which brings a bit of humour to round off the album. The Lidocaine won’t be for everyone, but there are moments of greatness here. If you like a bit of a musical challenge then The Lidocaine may just provide the hit you’re after.
