*. The Grand Silent System .*

Album: Gift or a Weapon (2003)
Genre: Prog Rock (Crossover/Folk/Exp.)  /  Australia

Australia, a country known for its outback, ethnicity, and as of late, a breeding ground for some startlingly forward thinking bands. "Gift Or A Weapon", the latest outing from these progressive musicians from down under, is without question an ambitious offering that resembles more a musical pilgrimage rather than your standard pre-processed album. Boundless in scope, the group journey through a variety of conflicting genres to express themselves and competently blend them all together with an alarmingly steeled focus. Jazz, funk, folk and more are some of The Grand Silent System's key weapons of choice, but that doesn't stop them from also incorporating rock, metal and a touch of world music whenever the necessity arises. At most times weighty and haunting, the group slowly push through the albums tracks with a discernible amount of resistance, implementing complexity and dense instrumentation to help strengthen their plight. Sounding somewhat similar at times to likes of a properly medicated version of Tool jamming with dredg and Jethro Tull; The bands grasp on musicianship is astounding and while prog-rock does seem to be a consistent foundation for their songs, a steady use of horns, flutes and a few other colorful instruments successfully broaden the horizons. Talented musicians of this caliber rarely miss a beat and with an impressive attention to detail exercised, this effort stays close to the mark. Inspiring, yet down to earth, the songs featured here are often grandiose in scale and somehow still come out sounding humble and grounded. Sure, it must be said that the albums slower pace does seem to work against it at times and there's no denying this isn't music for everyone. In fact, even those accustomed to such an encompassing musical experience such as this may likely only listen to this album on occasion. But that still doesn't detract from the fact that this effort represents a band setting their sights on the stars and nearly reaching them. An adventurous outing that should satisfy many a music fan disappointed with today's lack of artistry. Review by "wookubus" (www.theprp.com).
